The Beginning

Massage (muh-SAHZH)- The systematic manual or mechanical manipulations of the soft tissues of the Body, using such movements as rubbing, kneading, pressing, rolling, slapping and tapping. Used for theratputic purposdes such as promoting circulation of the blood and lymph, relaxation of muscles, relief from Pain, restoration of metabolic balance, and other benefits both physical and mental.

Styles and Uses

  • Tui-na (Too-Nah)- Chinese method meaning "Push-Pull"
  • Shiatsu (SHE-at-Sue)- The Japanese technique in which finger pressure is used on points of the stimulation on the body called TSUBO (t-SUE-Bo).
  • Swedish- employs the traditional manipulative techniques of effleurage, Petrissage, vibration, friction, and tapotement. Also employs movements that can be slow and gentle, vidorous or bracing, according to the results the practitioner wishes to achieve.
  • German- combines many of the swedish movements and emphasizes the various kinds of theraputic baths.
  • French and English- employs the Swedish movements as well. Many excellent facial massage and beauty therapy treatments originated in France and England.
  • Sports Massage- method specifically designed to prepare an athlete for an upcoming event, and to aid in the bodys regenerative and restorative capabicities following a rigorous workout or competition.
  • Rolfing- aligns the major body segments through manipulation of the fascia, or connective tissue.
  • Reflexology- orig. Chinese- based on the idea that stimulation of particular points on te surface of the body has an effect on other areas or organs of the body.
